Hamsters are great pets, but they do like to chew. They also are active little creatures and will try to escape if given the opportunity.
A hamster escapee can do quite a bit of damage, if not discovered and recaptured quickly and things like your curtains and other soft furnishings are all at risk of becoming the latest hamster bedding accessory.
The other problem can be that escaped hamsters are not recovered and they will either get out of your house through open doors, windows, chimneys or other vents, or find a small space to squeeze into and are never seen again. This can obviously be upsetting, particularly if the hamster was the beloved pet of a young child.
So to stop your hamster causing this sort of trouble, follow these simple steps:
1. Always make sure the doors on the cage are closed and locked. Some hamsters even learn to open the doors to their cage, so add an extra snap lock closer to the door, which the hamster will not be able to operate.
2. Make sure the cage is not close to curtains or other furnishings. Hamsters will pull material through the bars if they can and will then shred it to pieces.
3. When you let your hamster out for exercise (and they do like running around) make sure all the doors and windows are close and vents covered. Supervise your hamster at all times.
4. If your hamster does escape, close doors and windows, and then construct a hamster trap in the room. Take a waste paper bin and create a ramp to the top with a tray or other flat surface. Lay a trail of your hamsters favourite snacks along the ramp and put a few in the bottom to tempt your hamster into the bin. Hopefully your hamster will find his way into the trap and you can re-home him safely.
5. Finally, always make sure the doors on the cage are closed and locked, (see 1 above!)
