Best-Selling British Thriller Writer Andrew Parker Stops By To Chat With Mike Angley
MA: I am joined today by British best-selling thriller author Andrew Parker. He has a compelling life story that I could never do justice trying to put in my words, so I think it’s best I let him tell his own story. Andrew, please tell us about your background.
AP: I was born in 1966 then unfortunately back in October 1985 I had a serious car accident that left me wheelchair bound. I contemplated then, maybe I should write a book. But in Stoke Mandeville Hospital, I struggled to pick up a pen, never ever thinking I would write or type again.
With the strong support of my family and friends I did manage to get stronger and believe in myself even returning to full time employment. Then in March 2001, I had the best day of my life, when I got married, it gave me the impetus to accomplish things; unfortunately it wasn’t to last and we were divorced in 2006.
In 2005, I retired from full time employment to enjoy life, travel…I even accomplished water skiing, dry slope skiing, even appearing on TV in my favourite cookery show ‘Ready Steady, Cook’ with Ainsley Harriot, the first disabled person they have had on the show!
MA: Wow! You’ve experienced more as a young man than most people do in a lifetime…certainly a fair share of challenges and triumphs! Why did you settle on fiction given your compelling, very real life story?
AP: I wanted to write novels, because I just had a story that I wanted to get down in print and be excited by what experts and the public would say.
MA: What inspired you to write thrillers, religious thrillers as I understand?
AP: It was my job that gave me the impetus to write. I was getting stuck in a rut at work and found a couple of hours a day while I was at work to research and write brief outlines.
MA: Tell us about your first book.
AP: My debut novel, Prophecy of Power, is a religious thriller. The story is based on the prophetic world powers in the Bible, and in Revelation. It forecasts another world power to take over.
MA: Oh my! So who’s the hero in this doomsday scenario?
AP: He’s a Rabbi who falls out of love with his religion and wants to explore all religions. He’s well liked, pops into the local bar next to the synagogue, lives on his own in a nice suburb, has a ‘mother’ like character in the form of his cleaning lady, and drives a classical car.
MA: Well that covers a lot of bases! So what drives him…what makes him strong?
AP: His main strength is his determination even at the detriment of his belief to get to the truth. Weakness, probably his moments of loneliness…
MA: I suspect we’re going to read a lot of Andrew Parker in that protagonist. How about his nemeses?
AP: Strangely enough the NYPD, CIA and Catholic Church all want him found and stopped in whatever form it takes.
MA: Hey wait a minute! You just jabbed three of the good guys in my book! (smiles) So what’s next after the Prophecy of Power?
AP: I’m planning a follow up to this one called The Doomsday Preachers. The main character Jacob and many of the supporting cast appear in this next novel. I’m also working on a script for TV called The Chess Player.
MA: Well Andrew, thanks for coming by and spending some time with us. Ladies and gentlemen, please visit Andrew Parker’s website for more information about him and his best-selling novel, The Prophecy of Power: http://www.andrewjparker.co.uk/default.html
